Children & Youth
Infant and Toddler Nursery Care
Each Sunday, babies and toddlers through age 3 are well-cared for in our fully-operating nursery. There, they are greeted by one of our nursery staff, who helps ensure that all children feel welcomed in our space. During their time with us, children are encouraged to play, imagine and explore through a special Christian curriculum that introduces our youngest members to God’s love in all of creation!
Our Sunday School classes are offered in partnership with Christ Episcopal Church in their Parish Hall right next door to our church. Classes are held from September – June at 9:15 am, where our children participate in lessons on the Old and New Testaments that incorporate animated Bible story videos, Bible study, group discussion and creative activities. The classes are divided by age, and every grade is covered from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade. At approximately 10:20 am, the children join their families in church for our 10:30 am worship service.
Church-Wide Events and Service Opportunities
Each year, we offer a variety of church-wide events to help children be involved in our church community. Each fall, we hold Ice Cream Sundae Sunday to kick off the church year, as well as Blessing of the Animals and a harvest party in October. In the spring, we host a Mardi Gras party, an Easter Egg Hunt, and a church picnic. In December, our Christmas Pageant is one of the highpoints of the year!
We also do service projects throughout the year, such as Operation Christmas Child, Valentine letters to Veterans and Fourth Food Sunday, an ongoing food drive to feed the hungry. These opportunities teach our children the value and importance of giving back and caring for the community.
Our youth group offers monthly programs throughout the church year that provides spiritual, social and service opportunities for personal growth, new friendships and a deeper relationship with God and Jesus Christ.
All children, grades 6-12, are welcome to join us for a variety of activities including a New Year’s dinner; movie nights; a ropes course adventure day; a Lenten supper and service night; our car wash fundraiser; our annual Leadership Lab in New York City; and a Christmas trip to New York City to see the famous Fifth Avenue windows and Rockefeller tree.
In addition, our youth group participates in an annual mission trip to underserved communities across America, where students live out their faith in action through service. Past locations have included Pittsburgh, PA Atlanta, GA, Birmingham, AL, and Rutland, MA.
Bagels and Bible (7th – 9th Grades)
The B&B class explores biblical narrative through storytelling, creative reflection, and dialogue, helping youth find themselves in the Bible’s greater story. The class meets every week in Christ Episcopal Church’s Parish House, right next door to our church, at 9:15 am.
Confirmation takes place when one of our baptized youth is ready to claim the Christian faith as their own. This spiritual step is generally offered to those youth who are deemed mature enough by their parents (usually the year prior to entering high school). Those youth that haven’t been baptized are also invited to participate and can be baptized on the day of their confirmation.
The classes are conducted by our pastor and in some cases, the elders of the church. The youth typically will meet weekly starting in the fall and finish sometime during Lent (early spring). The classes cover the Heidelberg Catechism, The 10 Commandments, The Apostle’s Creed, and The Lord’s Prayer. In addition, God, the person and work of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and the nature of the Church are also taught. Confirmation classes are a great way for our youth to memorize Scriptures, ask questions and learn about the Christian faith. Each student is also asked to write his or her own credo (or, “I Believe” statement). Before the youth are confirmed on Easter Sunday, they are required to meet with the elders of the church. If you have any questions about Confirmation, please contact the church office by calling – 516.627.3494 or reach out to us through our contact form.
In 2013, we launched a new ministry with other local churches to support young girls, ages 12 and up, within our community. Through movie nights, retreat days, online activities, educational events and a whole lot of fun, we will work to equip our girls with social and spiritual tools that help them identify, confront, and transform cultural biases against women and be empowered to live abundantly. For more information and our latest activities, visit www.girlinspired.org.
We would be honored to have the opportunity to be a part of your children’s spiritual journey and hope you will join the many families already participating in our ever-growing ministries. In all that we do, we value creativity, self-expression, compassion, safety and inspired learning.
